The Rape of Nanjing
This horrific event was known as Nanking Rape or Nanking Massacre. In late 1937, more than 20,000 women including children and the aged were brutally raped during the Japanese occupation of Nanking city. They butchered an estimated 150,000 male “war prisoners,” and massacred more than 50,000 male civilians.
The bodies of thousands of victims of the massacre were dumped into the Yangtze River until the river water turned red due to the corpses of the victims of the massacre. After looting Nanking City, the Japanese burned and annihilated a third of the city's area.
Nanking once the most prosperous city and industrial center of china took decades to recover from the devastation it experienced. It was Abandoned as the national capital in 1949 for Beijing.
